OS TUBARÕES

From: Cabo Verde
On stage: Sun 07 Jul 22:20

In the late 60s, the small town of Praia lived quietly. Within it, groups of friends were becoming more aware of foreign music while heavily influenced by the Beatles. Among these groups were the young Zezé Barbosa and Duia, who enthralled by the quartet's impact embarked on the dream of making music. They managed to import musical instruments, and with more friends, a group was born. They animated the dances in the capital and became known as "Os Tubarões." Approximately five years later, one of the individuals who would leave a mark on the group joined, and that person was the vocalist Ildo Lobo.

1975 - Cabo Verde becomes independent, and Os Tubarões play a crucial and nationally prominent role in singing for independence, where the lyrics had explicit political content and the celebration reflected the colors of a free country. Singing about the rise of a nation remained prominent, and the emphasis given by the group to our poets and composers continued to grow. They celebrated the newly achieved independence, praised our composers, and naturally began to expand beyond the country. In this same decade, one of the group's greatest records was recorded - the LP "Tema Para Dois," where the musical stamp of Zeca Couto is undeniably present. Rhythms like Tabanka or Sanjon were explored by the group. The discography became increasingly diverse, and in the 1990s, they achieved another milestone in their career - the release of "Porton di nos Ilha," which was considered by many music critics as the group's defining moment. After Betu, Manel d'Novas, Pedro Rodrigues, or Nhelas Spencer, another composer rose to prominence - Orlando Pantera.

Os Tubarões had in their front man Ildo Lobo - one of the greatest voices in Cabo Verdean music history - a remarkable figure. He sang emotions, told the story of Cabo Verde, and embraced with his group the promotion of numerous musical composers, as mentioned above. In the mid-90s, the group announced their disbandment. However, in 2015, they returned to the stages, now with the captivating voice of Arlindo Rodrigues, in a lineup that had been together for the past decades. They maintained their musical roots, focusing on Cabo Verdean rhythms, especially Morna, Coladeras, Funaná, and the repertoire the group carries is a defining mark in the renewed sounds of a forever musical Cabo Verde.
